URRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEENNNNNNNT REPLY PLEEEAAASE HELP!!
Dude,
ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERING SHOUTING AND IS VERY RUDE!
That aside here's how it came down:
The YF17 was the loser to the F16 for the USAF's Lightweight Fighter Competition. The Navy and Marine Corps were looking for replacements for the F4 (USMC), F14 (USN) and A6 (Both). They realized with considerable mods this aircraft could fit the bill. The number 18 comes after 17, that's it: YF17, F18.
Originally, there were two versions: the A-18 which had sensors and software optimized for the air-mud role, and the F-18 which was optimized more for air-air. Rather than run parallel programs, the aircraft was modded so that the F18A had both sets of sensors and software. Hence the F/A-18 designation.
The F18E/F mod's are called "Super Hornets" as they have redone engines, more fuel and better sensors/payload.
OBTW the F18G model is going to be the new EW/SEAD jet replacing the EA6.
See, not that a big a deal.

Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet "New Generation of Air Power for Australia"
Why does the F 18 Super Hornet have rectangular intakes while the previous models are round?
I think the Super Hornet has more powerful engines....do they need more intake capacity??
When airspeeds reach the transonic state and beyond, there is a phenomenon called the boundary layer. It is a condition where the air flow around a surface becomes turbulent. When this occurs, it actually creates a cavitation or void in the intake region which will reduce the airflow to the engine.
Another nasty effect is that when it happens tocontrol surfaces, they no longer have control. WWII dive bomber pilots and other pilots learned about this effect the hard way with their straight winged aircraft. If you look at some of the older supersonic jets like the F4 phantom, they put hydraulically actuated elephant ear like bulkheads at the intakes towards the fuselage. These would fold in and out towards the intake in order to reduce the boundary layer. The MiG aircraft did the same thing with the nose cone within the intake at the front. The cone would retract or extend depending on the airspeed of the aircraft. The same goes with the SR 71, but that was more of a throttle control as the ramjet principle kicked in at higher mach speeds.
