Cape Air Cessna 402 Taking-off - St. Louis Intl' Airport
Air News On Massive Arcraft Purchase Agreements Of Narrow-Body Airliners & Blackhawk Gives The Caravan The "WOW Factor"
Two of the worlds largest carriers,American Airlines and Lufhansa, recently announced massive aircraft purchase agreements involving a total of 590 narrow-body airliners, the biggest being for 560 airliners by American Airlines shared fairly evenly between Airbus & Boeing.
Americans order is made up of firm commitments for 260 Airbus A320 Family aircraft,100 Boeing Next Generation 737s,100 "commitment to order" B737s with new engines and options for 40 B737NGs and 60 options for the proposed new-engined 737.
The biggest firm order went to Airbus after the European manufacture and American Airlines signed a firm contract for American to acquire 260 Airbus A320 Family aircraft.
The contract calls for flexibility for the airline to take delivery of A319s,
A320s,A321s,with 130 featuring Airbus new engine option(neo). All 260 aircraft wil feature large, fuel-saving wingtip devices known as Sharklets. The airline plans to announce its choice of engines to power the aircraft later.
The agreement with Boeing includes 100 Net-Generation 737s,with options for an additional 40 aircraft. In addition ,American Airlines has committed to order a variant of the 737 featuring new more fuel-efficient engines, pending final airplane configuration and launch approval of the programme by the Boeing board of directors.
This commitment for 100 airplanes ,with options for 60 more,is the first of many anticipated for this variant. The airplane will be powered by CFM Internationals LEAP-X engine.
American Airlines current fleet of more than 600 Boeing airplanes includes 156 Next-Generation 737-800s delivered to date. The agreement builds on the carriers existing backlog of 64 Boeing aircraft consisting of 51 737-800s ,seven 777-200ERs (extended range) and six 777-300ERs.In addition ,American
Airlines has an existing purchase agreement with Boeing to acquire an initial 42 B787-9 Dreamliners, with the right to purchase up to 58 additional B787s.
No details have yet been announced concerning planned delivery dates which, industry analysts predict, could begin as early as next year and extend several years afterwards.
The overall massive order, the estimated cost of which has not been announced ,but which could obviously run into several billion dollars,is aimed at replacing the airlines narrow body fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft offering state-of-the-art customer features.
Airbus claims that the A320 Family is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. The aircraft feature the latest technology available today, the widest and most comfortable cabin, and the highest degree of operational commonality. With 99,7% reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft today. More than 4700 A320 Family aircraft are in airline operation around the world today.
The A320neo ,launched in latte 2010, is the latest product innovation at Airbus. These new A319 ,A320,A321 models feature a choice of two new engines-the PurePower PW 1100G from Pratt & Whitney or the LEAP-X from CFM International . Together ,the Sharklets and new engine choices result in a 15% fuel burn reduction, corresponding compared with prior-generation narrow body aircraft, the fuel savings could easily amount to up to 30%. Airbus has received orders and commitments for almost 1200 A320neo Family aircraft.
Boeing ,meanwhile ,claims that todays operators flt Next-Generation 737s that are five percent more fuel efficient than the first airplanes delivered in 1998. Ertification of additional improvements is underway which will be included in aircraft delivered later this year.
Pending final configuration of the new 737 variant and board of directors approval,Boeing will take another step forward in improving the operating economics of this aircraft type.

Lufthansa Joins The Party
In another major single-aise purchase agreement announced recently,Lufthansa has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft .This contract follows the selection by the Lufthansa Suoervisory Board of the A320neo Family in March this year.
The order comprises 25 A320 neo and five A321neo aircraft. These will be powered by new-generation Pratt & Whitney PW1100G turbofan engines.
With this latest the Lufhansa Group,Airbus biggest airline customer, will have purchased a combined total of 443 Airbus aircraft,of which more than 360 are currently in service. These include: 254 A320 Family; 38 A330s; 65 A340s ; and eight A380s.
BlackHawk Gives The Caravan The "WOW Factor"
Waco,Texaz-based Blackhawk has unveiled a new turboprop engine that will give the Cessna 208 Caravan that extra "wow factor"
Jim Allmon, who heads Blackhawk ,revealed ar Air Venture 2011 the XP42A conversion for Cessna 208Bs which,he said,"will knock the socks off the competition."
The cost may seem high at US$605000 at current prices, but the engine will improve operational performance phenomenally and enable operations at maximum auw from airstrips operators hardly dared dream about using before.
Core of the conversion is a factory-new 850 shp PT6A-42A ,exchanged for the old 675 shp engine. But this is just the start.
A new four-blade Harzell propeller is fitted ,twin exhaust stacks, new beares, new carbon fibre cowling and digital instrumentation are all included in the upgrade so that pilots can hone the aircrafts performance even more accurately in the air.
Blackhawk claims a cruising speed increase of 15+% (25-35 knots), but more importantly double the rate of climb while using less fuel and increased take off weight to 4110kg (9062 lbs).
All this is most important to bush operators in Africa, flying from unprepared high altitude airstrips in hot weather.
A humanitarian operator, instead of carrying just a few hundred kilograms in such circumstances, with the Blackhawk XP42A, can how transport nearly one tone in to msuch remote village strips. The same goes for sky-dive operations and for those with float equipped C208B Caravans. All round, the conversion makes such operations safer and much more efficient.
When Jim llmon started Blackhawk in 1999, the Piper Cheyenne and Cessna Conquest 1 were his first targets. He Had been working for RAM doing piston engine-up-grade conversions, but decided to move to turbines and now claims to be the "Worlds NO.1 For Turbine Up-Grades".
He and his two partners own the company and employ 27. They have converted 320 aircraft in these 12 years and are sold out completely for 2011.
After the first two Cessna and Piper models,Blackhawk moved on to Beechcraft, and this is where most of its business hs come from prior to the Cessna 208 Caravan. In South Africa there are six King Air 90S AND EIGHT OR NINE King Air 200s with Blackhawk up-grades and the company now holds 20 cash deposits for Caravan conversions from customers all over the world.
There has been tremendous support for Blackhawk from the main suppliers involved over the last three years in this latest conversion, including P&W ,Hartzell and the FAA. The STC for the up-grade in the US is now approved by the FAA, but this has involved a huge 35000 man-hours time investment in research, tsting and paper-work.
Corrie Eckhart,Blackhawks director of engineering, alone put in 10000 of these man-hours including 202 CAD drwings. To date,210 hours of flight testing have been completed on the prototype, including extensive flights in to known icing conditions.
A78Db noise level now makes the up-grade EASA compliant. Hartzell helped with anti-vibration testing and Wipair did structural tests including 115 spins and recoveries and flights to FL260,way above normal operational heights.
Blackhawk is keen to continue with its King Air conversions, but with three or four of the Cessna 208B Caravan conversions and up-grades being needed every month, and a forecast increase in these, the company and its agents worldwide are likely to become extremely busy.
In South Africa they are talking to Comair as a possible second agent, and there is a likehood of another agent being appointed in Nairobi.
