Plane with retractable landing gear?
who invented the first Plane with retractable landing gear? and when?
J.W. Wartin's Kitten, built in 1917, had retractable gear (but could not actually fly). The Dayton Wright RB-1 of 1920 and the Verville Sperry R-3 of 1922 also had retractable gear.
The Boeing Monomail, which first appeared in 1930, and the Lockheed Orion are generally considered pioneers in the development of retractable landing gear, proving that it was practical.
For early retractable landing gear not even the performance improvements were clearly achievable, since a retractable landing gear with its motors and associated machinery weighed more than a fixed gear, thereby requiring greater lift from the aircraft and negating some of the benefits of the reduced drag of the retracted gear. While retracting the gear could improve the performance of the plane, it might require a bigger engine and more fuel—not to mention more money.

Airbus A380 Landing Gear Test
Is there a particular altitude for airliners to extend the landing gear?
I live in south west London and I normally see many planes approaching Heathrow. I noticed some of them take the gear out very early when approaching, let's say when they're still above the centre of the city. Some others don't do them until they are well over Richmond park, hence a 2-3 miles closer to the airport than before. Is there any particular rule for pilots to be followed on this matter?
In visual conditions, the gear is usually lowered just before final flaps, so to be configured for landing between 300 - 1000 feet above the ground
In instrument conditions, the gear is lowered about 3 miles from the Final Approach Fix, then the final flaps are extended, so as to be properly configured and on speed at the FAF/Outer Marker
